Amethyst Place Mission Statement

The Mission of Amethyst Place is to support women, recovering from drug and alcohol addiction, and their children by providing safe, drug-free housing and individualized family services. The Vision of Amethyst Place is that families will successfully transition to drug free, independent housing and healthy community living. A mom arriving at Amethyst Place has been chronically homeless, and her meager possessions fit in just a few trash bags. Here at Amethyst she is given a fully furnished and decorated apartment. Successful graduates keep all furnishings, allowing for a smooth transition to independent housing. The most immediate outcome we observe at Amethyst Place is how quickly our children stabilize when they have a room they call their own; and food in the kitchen; and a mom dedicated to creating a better life for her children. We see better educational outcomes for our children, less illnesses, and fewer behavioral problems. Home stability is the key to all these positive outcomes.

How Amethyst Place will use the B4B 2017 grant

Amethyst Place has multiple programs, including Supportive Housing and Family Self-Sufficiency programs. In addition, Amethyst Place has a Family Support Therapist. The B4B 2017 grant will help the Family Support Therapist to continue her work in helping residents.

Most residents come to Amethyst with a mental illness and in fact over 90% of current residents have a dual diagnosis: substance abuse with severe mental illness. Often, mental health issues which directly caused their substance abuse (bipolar illness, PTSD) are not being addressed. Residents face many barriers to addressing mental health issues including lack of transportation and child care, lack of telephones, and frequent changes in therapists due to high turnover rates. Children arrive with a host of emotional issues that are a result of separation and addicted parenting, making the need for family therapy essential to improving family functioning. Accomplishment: Amethyst Place’s program reduces the risk for alcoholism and other drug abuse among the children; improves family interactions; and reduces depression and anxiety of children and their mothers.

Amethyst Place’s therapist comes from a trauma-informed care perspective with a client-centered approach to treatment planning, and overall treatment themes include: recovery, boundaries, relationships, parenting, trauma, anxiety, depression, self-esteem, stress management.  In 2016 the Family Support Therapist completed 22 adult intakes. Intake sessions are mandatory for each resident. During these sessions the therapist completes an intake on the parents which looks at mental health history, drug history, any legal issues, and family history. This helps make sure each client gets the help and support they need.
