Everything was ready to rock. We prepared four different routes, seven fully-stocked rest stops, over 100 volunteers, a HAM radio army and numerous other services provided by more than 30 community partners and sponsors. All T-s were crossed and I-s dotted, but for the first time in our 10 years running B4B, the only variable we can’t control worked against us. Due to unsafe weather conditions, our rides were canceled. Ouch.
But there is good news! Through your great generosity, we have met fundraising goals. We will be able to provide grants to local mental health organizations in our community at the same level of funding as after our 2014 event (more info about beneficiaries here).
As an unexpected consequence of the cancellation, we were able to donate over 250 lbs of food to local food pantries. Also, representatives from mental health agencies including NAMI, DBSA, MOCSA and MHAH were at the Bike for the Brain Recovery Information Exchange, educating riders about their mission and services. Attention from TV, radio and newspaper organizations at the event, as well as a growing social media presence has helped to spread information and boost awareness about mental health in our community.
After great deliberation, this year’s event will not be rescheduled. With the complexity of the event and the full KCMBC ride calendar, any attempt to replicate Bike for the Brain would undoubtedly fall short of our standards.
Meanwhile, we’ve opened up registration for Bike for the Brain 2016 (donations also available) here: bikeforthebrain.eventbrite.com
See you at B4B 2016… an event for mental health.
